Listen to the daring stories of the Underground Railroad, a network of brave individuals who helped runaway slaves escape to freedom. Courageous John Parker, a former slave, led more than 900 fugitive slaves to safety during his lifetime. Operating out of Ripley, Ohio, he would venture deep into Kentucky to rescue runaways, leading them across the Ohio River to safety past slave catchers who patrolled the region. Ripley was also the home base of underground "conductor" John Rankin, whose guiding candles in house windows were beacons to fugitive slaves.
